DiDi, one of the world's largest mobility platforms, moves millions of people across 17 countries every day. The illustration system wasn't keeping up. We rebuilt it from scratch, in a way that actually felt like it's own universe.
DiDi was born in China. Its illustration system was too. But as the platform expanded across continents, something got lost in translation. Every region started building its own visual world: different characters, different styles, different proportions, different rules. The result was a brand that looked like many different companies depending on where you opened the app.
We were brought in to change that. Not to erase what existed, but to evolve it. Our job was to take the existing DiDi illustration style and push it further: friendlier, more empathetic, more human. And then turn it into a system so clear and so smart that any designer at DiDi, anywhere in the world, could use it and extend it without breaking the visual language.
That process started with the character. Before building a world, you need to understand who lives in it. We went back to first principles: body structure, proportions, personality, expression. We built a flexible skeleton that could become anyone, because that was exactly the point.
Then we built the people. Riders, drivers, delivery workers, Fintech users. Every size, every age, every skin tone. People in wheelchairs. Pregnant passengers. Families traveling together, including the four-legged members. The DiDi universe doesn't pick favorites. It was designed so that everyone who opens the app can find someone who looks like them.
Then we kept going, because a universe needs more than people. We built city scenes and street life. Landmarks from every country where DiDi operates. Food, dishes, and ingredients for DiDi Food. Icons, coins, currencies, and financial documents for DiDi Fintech. Devices, accessories, objects, poses. Everything a designer might need to tell a story inside the DiDi world without having to invent anything from scratch.
The system lives in Figma, modular and smart by design. Every piece is built to combine with every other piece. New characters, new scenes, new applications: all possible, all consistent, all DiDi. We didn't just create illustrations. We built the infrastructure for a visual language that can keep growing long after we handed it over.
